can anybody find a flaw in my logic? iv got a 29 gallon and i want to put a divider in it. i thought i would measure the width and height with a tape measure on the inside of the glass, reduce the measurements by a couple of millimeters, and have a guy at Lowe's cut a piece for me. the reduction by a few millimeters is to make room for a line of aquarium silicon to go all the way around on all the edges so when it gets stuck in place it will be a tight fit. i do intend to let the silicon dry on the divider before it is put in the tank (the aquarium is already in use and i dont want to tear it down for a divider). the sung fit is what will keep it in place.

anybody see any problems with this? i dont have experience with this so there might be some unknown when dealing with silicon or something that im unaware of, thats why im asking.

feel free to offer alternative solutions :)

You'll have to round the corners at the bottom of your insert so it fits your preexisting tank's silicone seal. Is the divider made of glass?

could be to short.
id personally just measure the inside and leave it at that. you could always turn it slightly at an angle.

yes i intend to make the divider out of glass. the only reason for that is i wanted to be able to put a non-permanent sealant type material (like silicon) around the edge so the divider could be held in place by the preasure that it itself creates as apposed to it being held in place by some sort of brace system ( i dont want to have to build a brace... like i said, i want this kept simple). ...and it is my belief that there is no such silicon type material for acrylic, that the acrylic adhesives actually harden into acrylic themselves, and that's not what i need, i need the edging material to be resilient so it hold pressure and can me removed easily later.

i didnt think about the bottom seal of silicon already in the tank, that could have been a problem, thanks :)

i know acrylic is easier to work with, and id love to use it, but like i said, i need a sealant such as silicon to go around the edge... and there is no such material for acrylic, is there?

I don't think so, no. But if you took a very/somewhat thin piece of acrylic that was intentionally cut 1/16th of an inch too wide it would flex on insertion and hold itself in place without any seal at all.
