any recommendation for small catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a few Mustache Catfish from Africa, Phyllonemus typus. They are mouth breeders and both parents will take turns holding the eggs. The catfish only gets about 3" long. Its a interesting small catfish.

corydoras catfish are terrific bottom-feeders, and readily available in all LFS and major petstore chains . . .

if your tank is big enough -- 55G or more -- you might also consider yo-yo loaches; these don't get anywhere near as big as clown loaches, and they have a lot of personality

in either case, try to get at least 3 or 5 of whichever one you go for; they do better when they are in small shoals . . . and, apparently, in odd numbers

ive had yoyo loaches before they eat so much, i thinking about getting them again though.

Syno Petricola cats stay small, are gorgeous and mine is super active. Cory Cats are always a good choice, too.

i had a panda cory but the yoyo loaches killed it.

Plenty of little cats out there. How big is the tank? Are you looking for just a bottom feeder regardless if it's active or not? Tankmates?

well i need something that is a bottom feeder dont really matter if they are active or not. also a good tank mate that wont bother other fishes.

i really like the pictus catfish. very active great bottom feeder and very hard to catch. lol. if anyone has a pictus for sale im willing to buy a few.

you can find them almost anywhere for about $10.

pictus cats are really cool, and they are affordable and generally readily available.

I have a little group of seven Synodonits lucipinnis (similar to S. petricola, but smaller) and I love 'em.

If you get a pictus, I would recommend a group of 3 or more. They are wonderfully insane little buggers, so make sure you don't have any fish in there that spook easily or stress easily. Like, I probably wouldn't put discus and pictus together. I say this for two reasons: a) Pictus would likely stress the discus out from their hyper behavior and b) they are little vacuum cleaners. They will out compete a lot of slower eating fish. If you don't think that will be a problem in your tank, I say get these guys. Adorable little fish. Oh, and I have found they are very prone to ich. Definitely quarantine these guys before you dump them in your tank. :)

thanks ill keep that in mind. im probably gonna keep them in with the datnoids.
so my choices are the julie corydoras panda cories or the pictus cats. ill figure something out. thanks for all the input guys i appreciate it.

How big are the dats? I would think that corys would eventually look like crunchy snacks to them.
