I was on craigslist last night, and i saw an add of this guy selling around 100lbs of sand for $20. I dont know if its just regular sand, reason why its so cheap or....!!??!

Can any type of sand be used for an aquarium?

Pool filter sand is what most people would recommend, and 100lbs of it from your lps or menards, lowes, home depot, or wherever, is usually cheaper than that.

Play sand can also be used but the major problem with that is it is difficult to clean.

Go pool sand I've used play sand in the past its awful, even after a good cleaning switched to pool sand and love it.

Play sand has caused horrific problems for all HOB filters that I have ever attempted to use on the tanks. It also looks terrible to me, and I am about the hardest person on Earth to get to "despise" the look of anything in an aquarium.

I would go with little mermaid tank decor before EVER making the drastic mistake of using play sand in an aquarium! Like everyone said, pool filter sand is the way to go!

One other option that has worked for me was Crayola Crayon brand colored sand. They had Emerald, Blue and Purple colored sand at Walmart. The grains are much smaller than play sand, but they must be heavier, because the fish that burrow in sand are unable to force the grains into the impellers of the two AC (110 & 70) on the 55G with the crayola sand.

I am currently switching to sand as well. And from what i've gathered pool filter sand is the way to go. Cheap and looks much better than play sand. Good luck let us know how it comes out. Id like to see some pics maybe get some ideas and tips for my switch as well.

Play sand is perfectly fine after you wash it and can be added to an existing tank with no mess if you wash it properly and not just tickle it. As for the looks of it, it depends which one you buy.

I cant say ive ever seen pool filter sand over here though, so I cant compare them.

Pool filter sand all the way. Can't beat $5 for 50 lbs. The only bad thing is I just wish it came in more colors.
