Izzy_here where you at?
Anybody know how many (if any) shorties I can anticipate from a spawn of a sb x kkp? I have some month old fry some certainly look fatter than others.

you should get a good variety of fish from those two as well as a good amount of sb since both have the sb gene. I have gotten a variety of sb when breeding parrot and prq females to my fh. you have to keep watch of the fry as they grow the sb fish will get picked off by regular body fish. make sure they are well fed. I use a magnifiing glass to look at the differnt body shapes pearling flowerlines ect. when the are small. got any pics of the parents?

Thanks for the info. I know I would get a diverse mix but am really hoping I get a decent amount of sb. I've been moving the thinner and smaller fry to another tank. I have maybe 150 left growing in a 75 and I will get some pics up.

Trust me you will b surprised on what you get

Agreed, there will still be a wide range of types, for sure a lot of sb's but all different lengths. It takes at least 3-4 generations of line breeding to get a uniform type, possibly many more. All I can say is expect a large percent of sb's, thats as exact as I can be, lol!

If this helps? The more sb a fry is, the more I think it looks like a capitol letter P fallen over face first...does that make sense?

...and then some don't seem to show it 'til later, like they look almost normal til around 1 1/2 to 2 inches then they just stop getting longer. Your most typey specimens will be the ones that show it right away, these may be the ones you want to reserve for future stock. I personally am choosing for longer sbs's this time around, not the stubby bulldogs I had before...although stubby bulldog stock could be useful in my current projects.

The only sb project I have right now is synspila x bp, it's been done to death I know but I really want to do some experimenting with it. Really curious to see if I can produce a fertile male hybrid syn by back crossing...or potentially see if a half syn half parrot male is actually fertile, they might be. Plus I think I want to somehow work parrot genes into my other BIG project. Got some great stuff in the works!

Hey Ed! I was hoping you would reply to this thread (last november!) and glad to see you are still breeding. You are right about the outcome but I think most of the shortbodies had a similar shape. I was hoping to see some in-between expressions of the trait but didnt. Then again if I really wanted to see that I would have to grow a much larger number out to over 2". I was curious about using the kkp.

Heres my favorite sb carpintis I have that you bred. He is beautiful and very aggresive.

Very nice, so nice to see some are still around, and turning out so well too.
