Ok let me ask you guys something. I have asked on many different forums and no one will give me a straight answer.

I have a 77 gallon hagen which has a footprint of exactly 47 3/8" long by 16" wide.

I really really want to use this tank for a SW tank. I want to drill it which is fine. I have it on a nice wood stand although the stand is gonna have to be scrapped since there is a wood piece right down the middle so a sump is impossible.

Therefore I need to build something. I am a little scared to just build anything because I am afraid i won't make it strong enough. I have a lot of metal stands laying around. A standard 4 foot metal stand is 48" by 18". So as you can my tank will reach along the ends but on the length side it will miss the metal. If I were to add a solid peice of 3/4" plywood across the top, would that be enough???

yes but wou will need a pice of foam between the tank and stank if i reamber.

anymore ??? i want feedback on this before the tank breaks on me one day

the plywood and foam borad will distribute the weight evenly, how much of an overhang will you have?
i have a 300 gallon acrylic tank with 7 stacks of cinderblocks and nothing in the middle
no problem

whoa. On the standard metal stand, at least in the ones I've seen, the tank is only supported at the edge of the stand.

If you put a piece of plywood across the top there will be no metal directly underneath the tank on one side. This will place huge strain on the plywood, and may cause it to warp and eventually break.

Additionally that extra weight is not centered so there is pressure on the legs at an angle. This could cause them to splay, which would be catastrophic.

If you want to take the plywood approach then I would at the very least test fill outside or in a garage and leave for a few weeks.

I'm not saying that the plywood wouldn't work, but it will defiantly be weaker than the stand was originally built to be, which is never a good thing.

How did you distribute the 7 pillars? four along the back and three along the front?

get those hands dirty and build one out of 4x4s and 2x4s. i used that for probably the strongest semi-prettiest stand to hold my 75 with 100 lbs of rock and 36 lbs of sand. if the tank doesnt fit flush at the max, then don't use anything, even if there's 1/16" overhang. better safe than sorry
