Any structural engineers? (Will my floor support a 210)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you do not want to set parallel to the joices. this a bad ideal unless you have it shored up underneath. 180 max tank i will set with out shoring and NEVER PARALLEL to the joices. grab a carpenter friend, feed him some pizza and beer and have it shored up.

1.5 to 8 ton to much weight to put on a 2 studs. tank 8 x 2 yes? you only coming out about 30 inchis total, leaving room to add Hob or run hosing. you not catching the 3rd. if ran perpendicular you catching at least 6 if not 7.

I have a 200 gallon hot tub and a 55 in my dining room :/
House built in 1930. No extra support. Been about 6 months and haven't died yet.

hot tub a big square it on same amount of stud no mater where you put it. not the same for a 2 x 8 tank.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll call in a pro when I can. I have the $ for the tank and to make a stand and canopy, but this will probably add a considerable amount to the cost.

I found 1 3/4" x 9 1/2" x 14' LVL for $45. I could add 6 of these joists under the tank area making the 2 joists 4 ply 2x10. I don't want to add any walls in the basement. I could handle the work, just have to make sure it's enough. Not sure what a structural engineer consult costs, hopefully it won't be too bad.

Hello; My take is that the question can only be answered by someone with knowledge of structure actually having a look to see what you have and what condition it is in. There have been posts (a link follows) describing damage from tanks from time to time, so it does happen.

In case some missed this thread a while back here is a link to it. A look at the pictures should give pause, they did for me.

Good luck

Couple days late but here it goes. I'm not a structural engineer but deal with them on a daily basis in construction. How "finished" is your basement ? the reason i ask is because either way you do it your gonna have to "remodel" the basement. The only way you can support that kinda dead weight would be to reinforce the joists that the tank sit on. A 12' span on 2x10's is asking for trouble. That length of span can only carry a dead load of about 500 lbs per joist without noticable deflection. You could put a 4x4 spanning out at least 3 joist perpendicular from the wall and existing joist and support that with 4x4 post on post anchors or 2 lally columns. If u dont like that look with the wood visible you could reinforce the floor using a 6"x 10"x12' i beam under the center of the tank. That would be almost impossible without major problems getting it in If you sister the joist with others i would sandwich the existing joist with two 2x10x12 on either side, gluing and screwing them together. This will decrease the the deflection rate and basically increase the dead load weight capacity but may still be asking for some trouble. Either way your gonna have some dry walling to do. Did you putting the tank in the basement ? Good luck.

call for a estimate usually cost nothing, call a company in for a quote and pic there brain about what they are going to do, matter of fact call 3. That way you have a better ideal of what you would need to do. again parallel will not work with out shoring up.

I'm going to be setting up a 125 that will be running parallel to my joists but I'm going to be straddling the metal beam that runs the length of my basement.
