You can feed your bichir bloodworms, beefheart, earthworms, and shrimp (like you buy at the grocery store). I think a tall plant behind the cave would look nice.

Nice tank. you don't need a background, but they look nice. what you feed your o will influence color more than background. hikari brand cichlid gold is a good staple. it wouldn't hurt to hide the heater, or put it vertically in a corner. also, on my tank, I found the thermometer strip a pain to read, and kind of an eyesore. most pet stores sell glass thermometers for about $2.00. they come with a suction cup, but I just let mine float.

You'll find, though, when you ask for advice on here you're going to get a basic generic answer: black background, white sand, natural rocks and stone.

in the end, its your tank, do what you want.

Maybe take your own advise and feed him this

well i would get a rubber nose in there with him and feed him small dogs that fart alot

If you put in a black background with your O his black and other dark colourings will look blacker. I tried this out a while back and didn't like it at all and switched back.

My O hated the background too and hated me for the change until 3-4 weeks after I changed it back. He likes me (somewhat) again now.

My O does't even like his fake plants. Can't imagine him putting up with even one that was real.

nice tank i think it looks better how it is now dont get a black background, i would add more filtration because you are slightly overstocked if you dont mind the temp strip then dont worry about getting something different and lastly feed your ornate a varied diet not just one type of food
