a 55 gallon is tuff to stock. I would personally go with a couple convicts.

Why not? There is enough space for them both,and you probably would not have any problems.Then again fish are anything put predictable.But it would be worth a shot. Considering he is looking for options on larger fish,55 gallon kind of limits you on that.
Bichirs would also work.

I really want a few big fish. I've always liked convicts, so maybe some of those? But i want to have more then one species.

A pair in a 55 would probably not let you keep anything else with them.They tend to get mean when they have fry.

i'd go with a green terror and a jack dempsey, maybe pushing limit when full grown, but with good filtration can be done.
