any suggestions on peacocks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok thanks for the replies i will tell her to get a 4ft and the same species peacocks, but i dont think she was planing to sell them, she just wanted different colours in the tank and she didnt know females all look the same.

Would it be hard to do an all male tank? Wouldnt they fight?

If your gonna do an all male tank do one of each species and mix ones that do not look a like.
Generally Aulonocara Jacobfreibergi tends to be more aggressive from what others have told me but it all depends on the individual fishes personality.
I have one from otter point and he is very docile, no aggression whatsoever.
With all male tanks its usually trial and error as some just do not mix well together. I've had mine set up for a couple months and have had to remove 3 due to aggression problems.
I always remove the aggressor even if he is the most colorful one and its a pain but has to be done in order to keep the peace.
Check out the link that i provided and you'll be able to make a list of what you like. Check out your lfs and see what they have available or order online. Another good option would be to check local fish clubs join one and participate in a auction chances are you will find some pretty decent stock.

HTH.

shes going to order them from a lfs in town and he told her to research and find some she likes and he would order them. he said they will be about 1-2 inches.
i dont think theres any clubs near where we live but there is three lfs and they can all get peacocks in.
she likes peacocks because theres a chinese take away shop intown that has a display tank with some nice peacocks but there probably all male because they are all colourful.

think maybe 10-15. they will not thrive without a community.

10-15 Peacocks in a 55 gallon tank. I dont see that lasting long especially if all males.

i had an almost all male tank(except one female sunshine) and it was a 55gal. i had 10+ in the tank with no problems. just don't give them something to fight over and they will be fine. i had a german red, regal, sunshine, jacob fribergi, yellow lab, kenyi, bummble bee, johani, 6 hybrid mbunas and a few others. i also was able to mix balas, angels, knifefish, oscars, bichirs and a few others. it all comes down to the fish itself.

now to get to that point i had 12 fish get killed and 5 i had to remove do to agresstion problems. after the first trial and error stage to get the 'good mix' that tank ran together for about 1.5yrs and i sold the fish off cause i needed a grow out tank.

to the op. greman reds are one of my favorite peacocks. sunshines are also up there. as said before just look at all the diff peacocks and pick your favorite colors and you should be fine.

i asked her if she was going to do all male or a trio of 1 male 2 female and she said trio but she doesnt know if she will do all the same or different.i will try to convince her to get all the same.
if she gets all three different i will make sure she doesnt sell them to the lfs.

but if she gets all different is it possible that she might get a nice male from cross breeding two peacocks?

yes i had some real nice looking sunshine and german red crosses...in the same spawn i had some that weren't all that great...

Yes if they spawn you will get some males. However, hybrids IMHO are undesirable.
