recently took a fish tank from a friend, its a 75 gallon tank, all it had in it was a red belly piranha. Its pretty small, about the size of a quarter. Any suggestions on tankmates? I was thinking some exodons.
Thanks!:)

There is a sticky in the piranha section on this. The Exodons will become food quickly.

i have heard of RBP's kept singly with large CA/SA's. But a school would quickly kill off anything else. And its def. best to keep those guys in schools.

other piranhas. Contrary to urban legend piranhas aren't the vicious predators they're made out to be. They're parasites. They eat scales, and fins off other fish (and whole fish too ofcourse, especially tails). Anything you keep with it, including to some extent other RBP's, is going to be chewed ragged, and possible maimed or killed. I've heard of pacus shoaling with RBPS even in the wild, but who wants a pacu when you can have another piranha? Best tankmate for a pygocentrus piranha is other pygos. They're skittish especially when they're kept solo. Also if you add other RBPs in there, make sure they are a similiar size to your dude. Also RBP's don't follow the normal too big to fit in the mouth rule. They have teeth so it doesn't matter how big the fish is, the RBP will take it apart piece by piece. You need about 20g per RBP fully grown. You could probably get about 4 in a 75 which is the recommended minimum shoal.

id say put a few goldfish or maybe a 1 inch catfish.

:nilly:what? lets hope you are talking about feeders and dont honestly expect them to live.

everything will become food... unless they are larger piranhas... you might be able to get away with some small fast tetra's or something.
but while the are under 10" expect them to be food.

I'm not to familiar with these guys so correct me if I'm wrong guys don't jags/dovii have nice sized teeth and an attitude problem? Might get to large for a 75 though I think they both get like 15ins?

pleco or other p's thats about it, they wont nip much if they are well fed

Even though people have a lot of success with plecos, they will be munched eventually. They may live for months and be fine but one day you will find just the head of it.

Armored cats tend to do well also. Raphaels come out at night while p's are usually not that active.

Juvy p's also have a tendency to nip each other at the juvy stage even while being well fed, Either for territory or just because.

You can try whatever you like but just about anything that wont kill them will get eaten sooner or later.

If you want piranhas keep just piranhas dont try to cohab them with other fish.
