I have a big blue and gold macaw in a nice big cage. I want to block his cage on 3 sides, so at night I can cover him. If I don't cover him, he more or less dictates my bedtime (even going as far as outright telling me to go to bed). I've tried cloth and plastic, but he tears those apart. I'd like to try plywood, but I don't have the tools to cut it down to the proper size, and I'd be unable to connect perches to his cage. Anyone have any idea what other materials I could use? part of me wants to try a really thick rigid plastic, but it's rather expensive and I don't have the proper tools to work with it. And like the plywood, It would get in the way of adding perches.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I have a african gray and i cover her cage with two heavy bed sheets when its time for her to go to sleep.

my green cheek conure's big cage is in my room and she is so noisy i have a separate cage in the bathroom and i put her in the bathroom when we go to sleep.

could you use plexiglass? and use a hole saw to cut holes where your perches go? go to a glass store and give them measurements and have them cut it to size.

Use a treat or something, whatevor he ADORES, for my congo it's eggs and oatmeal, then make a "treat dish" and put his treat in, close him in, throw a towel, sheet or whatever need be over his cage, and COMPLETELY ignore anthing his does after that.
This works much better if you are not in his area after "lights out" but you can still ignore him and he will learn he gets nothing from being loud after lights out.
Or you could go what I call the "hospital route" and install fairly cheap runners with shower curtain type runners he can't reach. So when it's "Night time" make a name for it, teach it to him by saying it every night and DO NOT respond to his requests after that time. EVER. But always tell him a word so it's bedtime. They have to learn a routine and if they don't, they will always test it. so pick a routine and stick by it.
He'll get it. If you stick with it.

Oh, I've been not responding to him for years. I've tought him there are tings he can say that will get my attention to get me to come, but he usually resorts to lots of screaming before he gives in and starts using people words. Part of the problem now is that I live in a tiny apartment, and its almost impossible to get away from him without leaving the apartment. Also living in an apartment, if he goes off late at night he will wake up a lot of people. I'm lucky I haven't gotten any noise complaints.
