Any True FW puffers that are good with tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
FW puffers are the biggest killers of all the puffer species.

oddly enough i think that's true, most of the SW ones can be kept with similar size/temperment fish.

some of the brackish are ok,

but the FW....

Yea come to think of it, the SW ones i've seen do have tankmates and dont see any problems.

If i do get a puffer, it'd be in with a flagtail prochilodus and a pleco, although as of right now I dont think that'll work out because i think those fish are too slow? watcha guys tihnk?

Pleco might be ok, my friend keeps a trinidad with his fahaka, and I've seen bushy nose in many puffer tanks. I would highly discourage the Prochilodus and a puffer. I tried the mbu with one and that was the only problem I got out of mixing fish with a puffer. I guess the Prochilodus started to suck the slime off the mbu and it got irritated and took a decent chunk out of the prochilodus's face. It healed but I seperated them after.

Again, if a puffer is a killer, it's a killer--even plecos aren't safe. The puffer can flip them over & bite their soft underbellies. My T miurus killed one bigger than him, overnight & my friend had a 4" fahaka bite an 8" pleco in half, as soon as it hit the water.

Your best bet are the South American puffers but they need regular teeth trimming. I have a modestus living with a 6" Royal pleco but he killed all his other tank mates.

South American puffers are good fish. I kept four of them with SA/CA cichlids for a while. They seem to like being in groups. I just couldn't get used to trimming their teeth (I have very shaky hands!) so I sold them after about a year.

i have a common with my Fahaka....also a while back i thought i'd try to see if he will be ok with my managuense, silver arowana, and synspilum...but since my tank had a 2" sand from the bottom...mines would burry itself under all the sand but its eyes are only what can be seen if you look carefully but once mines saw something swim above its head (BAM) nip fins...>=0....so yea most FW puffer are like the nippy ones of all puffers....brackish and saltwater ones are OK with others

Yeah, if you've ever seen how a puffer disembowls another fish, it's not a pretty sight. Looks like one of the most painful ways to go.

With that said, the two fahaka's I've kept so far have been too lazy to chase small fish. If I throw some cichlid fry in with them, they usually leave them alone but if a fish is a decent size to fill their tummy, they'll probably take a bite. When my current fahaka reaches 8-9" I might try adding a school of small tiger barbs or zebra danios to see how he reacts. At the moment he's living with 2 salvini fry.

I've found that my target puffers are the most likely to kill tankmates but my palembang is like my fahaka and doesn't bother tiny fish.

This is just my personal experience and I wouldn't advise anyone to mix fw puffers with other fish.

Chris.

suvattii here kills everything, from tiny fast danios to fish or crabs the same size...he's a killer...

cheers

I've had success with Irrubesco's and other fish.
My Mbu is ok with other fish for the most part but has nipped a couple of fish in her time.
