An island somewhere......
I purchased a few "Euro-Braced" glass aquariums for my fish room..... I plan on using sponge filters on most of them. It didn't don on me that the brim was too thick for a standard HOB filter until I brought the tanks home. Is there any way to cut/knotch out a 1"x8" piece in the bracing? Any tool to cut glass? It shouldn't impede on the integrity of the brace, just a knotch. These tanks are 50g. glass tanks, 36"l so not too much pressure on the inside. Thanks.

dremel...not sure what type of bit though.. theres got to be something that sands glass better than sandpaper.. cuz that would would but it would take forever...

Use a dremmel with a diamond impregnated grinding bit. And wear eye protection (the story of my trip to the ER was not a fun one).

just go canister. trying to cut and or shape glass is work. running a canister is sooooo much easier. but its too fat all the way around?

Sounds risky. Do you know if the glass is tempered or not?

I wouldn't think the glass would be in the way. I have seen may people trim the plastic in order to fit on filters.

That's what I was going to do but these are temp. tanks and I'd hate to drop $200+ on a couple of canisters..... might have to do it though.

most hardware stores sell a tool to cut glass, i actually have one here, basicalyy you score the part you want to cut, in your case a little square, then with a quick strike break it off, or my suggestion for you would be a pair of vise-grips and a quick snap and then sand the edges (if u go to a glass shop they should be able to show you on some scrap glass my buddy used to work for one here thats how i got the tool and the know-how) sorry it is kinda hard to explain

Actually, you can't use one to cut a square. The corners will act as stress concentrators and send cracks in random directions. It isn't all that easy to cut thick glass by scoring it anyway. That's why I didn't recommend it.

take em to a glass shop a see if they can make the cuts for you. i dont think it would cost too much. cheaper than buying canisters for sure.

Diamond bits or hole saw are the way to go (find on ebay).

Listen to CHOMPERS, he's got the experience (cuts) to prove it.;)

Got room for a sump & overflows? No cutting required.
