I live in coastal southern california so temperatures wouldn't get too low (above 65F) I'd figure something like jewels or kribs should be fine?

I keep my kribs unheated - the tank sits mid 70s usually (by a window and a glass hood to keep it warm).

Kribs
Jewels
African Butterfly Cichlid
Should all be fine in unheated tanks even through winter. My past stock survived 8-10°C nights for a week or more. The pumps and lights add a little warmth but that's not reliable
