I know HOB filters are generally thought of as noisier than canisters, but I don't see why they have to be, provided the water level is high enough so that there is no waterfall noise. I have a penguin 330 that came with a used tank and I can't hear it running from 2-3 feet away, but those are discontinued. I also have two penguin 350s, but those are noisy :irked:

Quiet HOB is an oxymoron! :D

Seriously, they shouldn't make noise as long as you keep the water level high enough. A lot of people aren't that vigilant, however.

I own two aquaclear 110's on my 85 and you can't hear them run at all. One of the best hob filter for the buck in my book.

It`s not just the "water fall" noise that rubs people the wrong way.
Most of the time it`s the noise from the junk impeller system used in construction.
Those that have silent HOB, you are lucky.
With just a bit more attention from the makers, the HOB could be an excellent filter method, but I doubt that will ever happen.

I tried an AC110 for a while but ultimately it was unnecessary and too damn noisy.
None of the noise was from splashing, I keep my tanks full, the noise was from it vibrating really, really obnoxiously. It was even worse with its lid on.
It's still sitting on the tank. Not turning it on any time soon though.

I have two emperor 400s and no noise.
