Anybody else "lease" fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If a LFS has a species of fish that sits around for 6 months without selling, they won't be ordering it again.

Bingo. Essentially, are enabling the store to continue this practice. If folks are concerned about global warming and continue to buy Escalades then, they remain part of the problem. Be part if the solution, do some research and buy suitibly sized fish from somewhere else.

I will agree though that a 55 gallon is s challenge to stock with cats. Cats are big wasters, and 55 gallon tanks might have a water capacity of such but the 02 capacity is more like 46 gallons. Add on top of that, most cats are schoolers and are much happier that way. Cories are obvious choice, but if your into larger cats you may want to check out plecos or some of the smaller featherfins( synodontis). L264 sultans only get to about6" and are absolutely showstoppers. L75 paras get to about 9" and look like little cheetahs. L204,L002,l333,L066, all stay under 6" although some eat wood so research and up filtration accordingly.

Point is, these are just some off the top of my head. There are literally hundreds that stay small and are absolutely stunning and won't cost a ton. Planetcatfish is a great place to start. Good luck!

I could agree with the money situation being kinda bad, but for me, spending 40 dollars on a fish for a few months isnt that bad, yes the pet store only gives me 25% of what they will sell it for, but its not a surprise its their policy and they tell it right to you, id give it to them for free, i dont really mind, and the day some scientist gets a dwarf RTC, ill be the first guy in the store to buy it. I have to look into all those cats you posted up, i prefer the catfish that have long wiskers and longer bodies, rather than the fat raphael/jag cats.

my version of leasing is owning fish that temporarily fit in my 30 before allowing my friend (who I notify in advance) to take it when it outgrows the tank as he agreed before i got the fish. he has a 55 and I don't buy cichlids, i stick with peaceful fish like pictus cats and some synodont catfish that can live in a 55 for life

Very Lame idea mate (had to be said), if your buying fish that will grow too big for your setup then what are you thinking???

Get a bigger tank to accomodate them or dont buy such fish. your LFS is laughing at you behind your back! Not only did they make a killing off you for selling it to you @ $40 originally, now youve just given them back a display sized fish which they will onsell for more massive profit.

Take your time and research and think it through, im sure you could on-sell the fish to a friend or other local fish keeper (not retail store) gheaven hep you if you ever have kids.

The only way I can find this acceptable is if you personally have a good home already set up for when it gets too big... so its more like you are performing a growout service.

So why not keep smaller pimelodid catfish?. These can grow from 6-10 inches and will be able to live in your 55 upon their maturity.

I don't see anything wrong per say with leasing fish except when it comes to fish that most people cannot house as adults such as redtail catfish.
If you really do have homes lined up each time when they outgrow your tanks, then this seems OK.

I agree with spiritofthesoul if you cant afford a large tank dont buy the fish I have a jag in a 55 right now and I went out last week and bought a 120 so he has a place to live for life!!

I don't give the fish to the fish store, I give them to a freind of mine who is willing to take them and has a big enough tank. I only have a 29 while he has a 75 with only a big angelfish, a pleco and a school of giant danios (5) and I ask if he will take the fish before i consider buying it, I also meant the smaller pictus cat species. i grow them out then he gets them for free, plus I avoid agressive species or species that overgrow a 55 to be a little safer.
