anybody ever have a mean rostratus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What size tank did you raise that 14 incher in I have read in the wild they can reach 16 inches.

They can probably grow to over 20".
I had him in a 125gal. I sold him and he went in a 240gal.

Fossorochromis are usually peacefull untill they get around 10". After that they will be so dominant that they give the other fish a hard time.

Its not that the Fossorochromis will kill the other fish in the tank, but they don't accept other dominant males in the tank(except if the male can fight back. Think of a Buccochromis, Nimbochromis Fusco, Tyrannochromis etc).

If given enough time, proper feeding and regular tank cleaning, these fish grow to 35cm(about 14"). Expect the male to be at this size at 4-5 years. They grow pretty quick to 10-11" after that its a slow steady growth to the maximum size.

That was what I had read about 14 inches for a tank raised male. Our big male is gentle except when mating but that is normal for most cichlids. Our mean one is only about 7 inches he is just a different fish than the rest of them.

Both our males fight daily and now both will show dominant colors pretty regulary. They only go after the other Haps in our tank and will not tolerate other males to color up without a struggle. Last week our champsochromis spawned and the spawning male herded the entire tank into an 18" section of the tank. It was funny to watch the two rostratus hovering shoulder to shoulder without fighting.

I bet they felt a little cramped funny neither one thought he was the tough guy then did he. Do you have any females and how many if you do? We moved our group to our 6 foot 180 the other night and within a day we had a female holding. There are 6 rostratus and 4 dolphins in there and they get along great even the dolphins spawn in that group.

We are growing out two juvies , right now they are ~ 6" and are in the same tank as the big guys. We are hoping for girls but will have to wait to be sure, our sub dominant male did not color up for 18 months and we thought he was a she until then.

Ours are inna 210G and that tank got small in a hurry when we put them in there.

That is what drew us to these fish was the color of both male and female. They have all been peaceful till this guy he is more peacefull again in our 230 with the more agressive sa's. Our colony seem very happy now in the 6 foot 180 but they sure fill a tank in a hurry. We have about 100 fry we are growing out but now need a bigger tank for them. Fox3 it sounds like you probably have 2 females there but I would remove one of the males. It will be alot easier on the females and take some of the turmoil out of the tank of the males fighting. Are they both the same color if not keep the one in you like the color of the best.
