ive got a large piece of cardboard and just used black paint to cover it, put a few layers on let dry overnight and looks good
 
I never have the towel inside the tank. I typically hung them connecting them to a HOB filter and a heater for most of the weight and then a little tape for the corners.
 
I've used automotive window tint as a background. It's easier removed than paint, plus it can be cut with and x-acto knife and tucked under the tank frame. The only thing is that you really have to be good with it in order to apply it. Any bubbles will stick out like a sore thumb on the inside of the tank.
