Seriously since this is the monster fish forum, i'd think i'd hear more about these guys!

They get to 8" and can swallow fish up to 5".....i mean seriously is there anything more monster then that?

its like a mini pbass that doesn't look totally ugly and has a bigger mouth!

I have 4 normal nandus nandus and 2 rare 'slaty' nandus sp. that is undescribed yet but they are voracious eaters and are awsome to watch eat. they are from 3 inches to 4 inches.

sweet any pics? have you got yours onto prepared food at all?

Um no pics but wes has some pics of the slaty nandus in his rare fish thread. They look amazing in person. i wish my camera worked so i can take pics. But ya they eat mainley krill and shrimp.

I had a pair, lost 1 in the move. It's currently housed with 2 Rhaphs, 4 Tats, 2 scombs, and a pink tailed Chelcius. About 3 inches. Main staple is nightcrawlers, since only 2 other fish in the tank eat them. Still prefers live fish but doesn't get them cause of all the payara. Also eats freeze dried krill, market shrimp, and ghost shrimp.

And yes they are capable of eating fish almost the same size as them. I wish I could find some more......definetly one of my favorite fish.

Thats a south american leaf fish.. they stay 'ugly' if thats how they appear to you .. just kidding.. but they can swallow fish almost as big as themselves.

I mistook it for a cichlid many years back and kept it with my africans (slightly smaller than the leaf) ...

no points for guessing what happened ...
I took it back two days later, after loosing four africans to it....

hmm i just have no luck getting mine off of live fish! i've tried nightcrawlers, i've tried that trick where you tie a string around a piece of food and make it look like fish......i'f starved it.

actually when i starved it, it fought back and ate some of my other fish that it wasn't suppose too. now when i starve it it just gets pissed at me.

Its not a South American leaf fish, if you knew anything about nandus sp. you would know they come from india and regions around that area. South american leaf fish (Monocirrhus polyacanthus) are similar looking but you can tell between the 2.

I have seen them labeled as African leaf fish.

The only way I had success getting ANY of my picky preds off live food is to keep them with fish that eat non-live already. Monkey see, monkey do.

Dats taught my Nandus. The Nandus then taught the Rhaphs who taught the Scombs and the Tats. Gar taught my knife. Tiles taught stonefish. It might sound messed up but it has worked for me every time.. I have NO fish of the 70+ I keep that rely on live food. The Scombs and Nandus still get a fish every now and then but that's only cause they are on the bottom of the totem pole in thier tank and usually get shanked if they try to compete with the Tats for krill.

Try keeping the Nandus with dats. They will see the dats eating and eventually catch on.

I will be getting a 150Gallon and will have about 3 dats in it. I was looking for some tank mates, and this is deff a cool looking fish. Guess its time to do some research.
