Anybody have a rival? Or a mentor in the hobby?

My best friend and I got into fish keeping around the same time, I have the bigger tanks but his are all acrylic while mine are glass, whenever we go to the fish store we are always fighting over who can buy what fish but I usually win because I have the bigger tank, but anyway we like to trade our fish every once in a while (he's always trying to steal my favorites) but it's nice having a fellow enthusiast as well as a rival in the hobby to help yourself improve upon your own aquarium keeping. We like to give each other tips with design and we even trade out decorations!

My mentor(s) have been mchambers from cca. He's been really nice and helpful whenever I try to breed something other than a big cichlid. And every time I do try to breed a new type of cihlid dogofwar from cca has been extremely helpful.

I try my best not to make rivals.

Nice thread,
Nobody I know is really into fish keeping,
But if I had to say someone I would say my father as my mentor.
I started with a little 40L guppy tank a long time ago and brought him back into fish keeping as he always had when he was younger.
Then we both got a community tank of 125L and he teached me the basics.
I got bored with the basic fish and started reading on the internet and started with cichlids which I still greatly enjoy.
Now the roles are reversed and I teach my father about cichlids.

That's awesome, yeah it's really cool to have a friend you can always privately trade with or that you can dump your extras on!

There's this kid that started following me on Instagram after I'd been keeping fish for a few years. He had a 29g and at that time I was running 7 tanks full bore biggest 125 and the rest ranged on down to a couple 10's. I was I'm full swing with buying plecos and had tons different ones and he liked them. After about a couple months he went and started a fish page and claimed to know all kinds of things about the plecs, the funny thing was he only knew things about the species that I had kept lol. So even though he claimed to know more then everyone else, he knew only 10-15 species of plecos and a few common fish. I called him out on it and he said "no I know more then the ones you own, and I own all the ones I've talked about I own". The funniest part is after that statement he went and tried to buy every species that I owned just so his statement wouldn't be false. By that time I had sold and bought others and he continued to get flustered cause he couldn't keep up with me hahaha. I just moved on with my fish keeping and to this day he still gets upset cause I have stuff he can't afford or can't find. He competes... I just laugh and keep on enjoying the hobby

My younger brother was my fish rival when I first started keeping fish. I got the idea to get Into The hobby first and he acquired a tank first and stole my idea grrrrrrrr. That was then and this is now, and he will readily admit I got it lol. As far as a mentor I was randomly talking about getting a tank a with a coworker when I first started keeping fish, and he told me that he's kept cichlids for over 20+ years. He taught me the most important thing Ive ever learned about keeping fish......water quality. A few work conversations definitely accelerated my fish keeping knowledge just by picking his brain. Toast to the old school :)
