most of my friends don't care for fish keeping. the closest I have is my friends mom has a 20 gallon tank with three 7 inch common goldfish in it.
Anybody have a rival? Or a mentor in the hobby?

I haven't had a proper rival or mentor on the forum yet, though Oddball has been my mentor for my time as a moderator. I kind of exploded onto the scene of MFK about a year and a half ago and took off running in a direction in an odd direction. I suppose if someone had already done the work I wouldn't have been compelled to research the silvery tooth fish so well. I can't ever do anything the easy way lol.
The one thing that I do really appreciate and from which I have taken a lot is this community. This is a large group full of helpful people who are willing to go out of the way to help others. This has been one of the most positive and encouraging communities I've been privileged to be a member of on the internet. I only hope that I can give something back to this group who has given so much to me.

same here! I don't even know anybody with a fishtank. Tried to convert a few people but I think they are content looking at my tank.
Most of my friends think my tanks are far too big (160l and 100l) and wonder why I get so irate at people squeezing goldfish into tiny tanks... they also can't understand my fascination with fish, especially "ugly fish" (their description of my Channa pulchra) as for mentors, the people on this forum have really helped me from being someone with a 9l tank with a goldfish to having two largish tanks and wanting larger.I also appreciate the help one guy at my lfs gives me (plus showing me when they have nice new predators or catfish in).

No rivals here, I respect every fish keeper who knows what fish keeping means 
and mentor..i could say that my biggest mentor is MFK forum - i learnt a lot here from others success and mistakes

Was gonna say.. my biggest mentor has been the General forum... learn what to do and what not to do really quick just reading threw the threads ect... I tell anyone I know interested in fish to come here and just pour over the threads that pique your interest for a few hours.. and you'll learn more about fishkeeping then any book ever has. Not to mention the collective knowledge for anyone wanting to delve into rare/oddballs chances are you'll find someone who hasn't just kept them but is doing it successfully.
Rivals? I don't think so.. but 'm not afraid to say when I disagree w/ someone, but I'm also quick to admit when I was wrong and learn from my mistakes/wrongs. At one point most if not all fish keepers "learn" a lot of just bad info/advise/"truths" for me that's been one of the biggest "Mentors" here is learning how to not just do it better but do it right.

also, I look up to this guy who I won't name but he's got sick JDM stuff for a non vendor, probably a street pharmacist and because English isn't his second language, he comes off a bit harsh to people at times and it makes me laugh, awesome guy though.
