Anybody with a 36"x18" footprint tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My versa-top on my 40 is thicker than the ones on the 30's.
No worries it was made to support the weight of a light.

It says the 36" versa top is only 9 1/2" wide (front to back of tank) so that means the plastic strip covers about 8" on its own? that seems like such a gyp.

Do you think I could make my own glass lid for under the cost of a versa top (let's say $30)?
I have exactly 17" to work with as the opening of the tank. One panel would have to be 8" wide because my shoplight will be 7" wide and i don't want to have to move the shoplight to open the lid, nor have part of the shoplight resting on crappy plastic. The front panel that will be open-able would be 5.5" wide. That leaves the space in the back at 3.5" which is plenty for the HOBs i'll be using.
So I'll need a 35"x8" and a 35"x5.5" piece of glass, hinge, and handles. How thick did you guys say the versatops were for your tanks?
Anyone familiar enough with glass prices able to tell me if this is doable under or about $30?

Here is another pic of the back. I removed the plastic to show you. It is only 2.5 inches, and again it is WAY thicker than other plastic covers for the other sizes. I can't emphasize enough how the lid is surprisingly heavy thick and strong. I don't open it with one hand ever. I dropped it once and almost poo'd myself! If your fingers are wet there is no way you could lift it with one hand......

The glass is 7.5" just measured it. X2 so that is 15" 2.5" plastic, and .5" with the gap needed for lifting it in and out of the brace, and the center hinge is the rest of the unaccounted .5".......

Hope th e DIY lid goes well, I don't buy any of mine.

You can also support it with Eggcrate...I have it on several of the utility tanks. It's easy to split so you have plenty of support and ease of maintance.

:ROFL: Egg crate actually being used for what it was designed for ..who would of thought it on here!:ROFL:

ok well for some reason

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3790

says dimensions without backstrip is 35-1/8" x 9-1/2"

are they just wrong on that part? can you measure the back glass panel for me?

It looks like this is for the 40H:

36" Versa-Top30 gallon / 40H35-1/8" x 9-1/2"

That's probably why the dimensions don't make sense. This is basically the same length and width of a 30 gallon...only higher.

If you have a standard AGA 40 Breeder (36" x 18"), you would want to go with a top that has 14-1/4" panels (without plastic strip).

LOL...What WILL they think of next...
