I took my mom there today and as usual I spent most of my time admiring the fish in their Amazon section. I love that exhibit, though I always find myself wishing the people section wasn't so well lit, as it makes photography impossible and viewing tough.

Anyway, at one point I was sitting on the floor looking around for the discus they said were in one tank, and I spotted a few fish I didn't recognize. They looked like miniature geophagus, bodies maybe a bit longer (sort of how a satanoperca daemon is a tad longer/thinner), and had a very colorful red/yellow tail. They were the size of my juvenile orangeheads, so only about an inch in height x 2-3 inches long. My memory is fading now but I want to say they even had some deep red on their bodies, kind of like the red you'd see on a jewel cichlid, but I could be making that up since I also ended up spending a lot of time at the jewel tank later in the day (there were several pairs of parents in that tank, which made it very fun to watch).

This was in the "smaller" tank that was on the side wall on the right as you first pass through the doorway into the wide end room that has the tank with the black aro and huge prochiloduses. So if you're looking at that, it's on your immediate right, same wall as the first tanks (with the cool huge rays) but through the big doorway/arch thing.

They seemed to have all their fish listed on the touch screens but this one wasn't on it. It was very colorful and interesting (they weren't being very nice to each other) and I have no idea what it could be. Have any experts been there lately that might know what I saw?

yea we was just ther like a couple weeks ago.

Wouldn't think they'd have gymno's with discus due to temp differances ... I would guess Biotodoma or Retroculus.

My guess would be Biotodoma, too. A lot of people mistake them for Bolivian rams. Take a look at them on Google Images:

darth pike, I have never heard of Retroculus before. That's the second S.A. fish I've learned about today. I have to stop reading this board or I'm going to be broke from buying tanks for all these new, unusual fish.

ummm i cant remember either i was distracted by the large silver arow they had ;)

Deffinately don't look up Retrolucus xinguensis pics then man ... especially the Lee Newman breeding photos. :grinno:

yes i just went there the first week of september. there were severums, oscars, and some geos. it was cool.
