Anyone DIY Plywood Sump?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So it'd be much easier if I just used like 2x2 squares?

I haven't tried using pieces instead of strips... I just saw it in a youtube video. I just thought it might be something you might want to look into. I am sure stips will work. Chuncks are another option that might or might not be easier.

I am pleased with how my sisters stand turned out... and I had a 7 year old helping me.

I guess i'll just try both methods!

I plan on it! :) still gotta get the yes from my mom, then off to the hardware store! :P

I couldn't tell you if drylok would seal sufficiently. I was considering sealing my entire sump with a complete shell of fiberglass. I know it works for boats.

Well I suppose I could try drylok.. I hear a lot of good things about it

I'm just gonna go ahead and do this.. can't find any 20gal aquariums for cheap (all that will fit under my stand) .. would 1/4" plywood be good? Or should I go 1/2"?

Also, I planned on using 1.25" pvc for all my plumbing.. now what size bulkhead do I need? And what size should I drill my hole in my aquarium for the overflow?

I know people have had success with applying Drylok to plywood directly, but I highly suggest lining the plywood with 1/4 hardiboard.

I used 1/2 ply lined with 1/4 hardi for my 112 gallon, i'm sure it would work for a sump
