Anyone Done Business with Rare Fish USA?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is a club out here but they meet on Sunday and I can't make the meetings.

I tried finding breeders around here when I was still into Malawis, and I just seem to be in a really dry area as far as cichlids go.

There were some on Craigslist not that long ago but my tank wasn't ready. :banghead:

What kind of cyps are you looking for? I may be able to refer you to someone

I think I bought the last of his cyprichromis utinta (they were 1") and he tried to sell me his breeding group. He might be done breeding these guys. He ships well and apparently he has speaking engagements on Frontosas at various fish clubs.

There are 10 cyprichromis utinta on sale if you check Los Angeles Craigslist for cyprichromis. They are only 1 inch long though and you will have to wait to see color until they are about 2 1/2" or so -and he only wants $5.00 each. The seller is listed in Monterey Park.

There are also a couple auctions on Aquabid for some cyprichromis but 1 group consists of young fish (maybe a few weeks/month old) and the other group is made up of expensive wild adults.

1 "local" breeder is located in Ventura, CA and will not ship the cyprichromis utinta. www.girlvirgo.com

Another place that does ship will only do airport to airport through Southwest Cargo www.tomstanganyikans.com. This guy has large fish for sale but they are more expensive. Minimum order is $175.00.

Good luck, I am not sure why you are looking for a small group (of 3?) but I read that they should be kept in small schools of at least 6.

What about Bluegrass Acquatics? They have some but small juvies.

Still no luck? Why not try Aquatilium?

http://www.aquatilium.net/LIVE_FISH_PRICES.html

They are a sponsor on this website, and they are close to you so pickup/cheap shipping are possibilities. I am thinking about ordering some Altolamprologus Calvus from them pretty soon.

Well, I bought 5 of those 10 Utinta that were on Craig's List. I think I got 1 male :-(

The shop near here that was supposed to get some in April, has 4 -- wait for it -- Utinta. But I paid $10/ea from a private party and they want $20 each--so I might get a couple more if they will sex them.

I'll take a look at the link you gave me. I'm trying not to pay for shipping if I can help it--

Thanks much

Update: Whoa! Those are some hefty prices. I think he's catering to people that want to breed and or want WC or F1s.

68 miles 1 way from my house--doable, but the prices are too high for me.

Thanks tho--I do appreciate it. :D

Strictly fish is having a sale today and I picked up 2 male Utinta for less than $30.

I think I'll give it a rest now. I want to see my m:f ratio before I buy any more.

BTW: they are selling acrylic tanks at cost, but you have to go in. I almost bought one.

Join the club. Most are maybe $10/ year.
Most have a message board or some kind of mailing list.
Even if you can't make the meetings, they probably have a "wanted to buy" section on their forum
Fish clubs are extremely helpful.. IF they don't have any breeders, they probably know of someone that does.

Just think about it.. that membership fee could potentially save you a lot on shipping and fish costs.

That's a really good idea. I only thought about joining if I could make the meetings, but getting to network with people that might know breeders is worth looking into.

Thanks!
