I'm a firm believer you should never mix fishes from other regions. I know people do it everyday, with success. I just tend not to. Plants I'm so picky about but when I was younger I noticed adverse effects from mixing fish, haven't mixed fish since 2004. I even try my best to stay with the same regions of rivers or lakes. Anyone else feel the same?

Africans with South American ciclids, ive seen a Texas cichlid get destroyed by a small mbuna. Water quality is another reason, seen some fish thrive while others suffer. If you had success power to you. I just don't like it.

That's a very extreme example (different ends of the spectrum on pH requirements, and clear behavioral incompatibility), which most of us on this site can agree isn't a good idea. Your OP seemed to imply that you're opposing mixing fish like datnoids + rays, Asian aros + Cichla, Bichirs + SA aros, etc... there are many, many common species combinations that defy your rule yet cause no ill effects...

I still wouldn't mix. Asians with Asians SA with SA. AU with AU. I like many monsters from Asia but I don't care to mix. I try to keep it native. Just got rid of an adopted clown knife because I chose South american primarily because of my RTC.

That's cool; there are plenty of people around here who enjoy their biotope setups. I definitely see that there is a certain appeal to attempting to recreate a natural environment. I just don't believe that there are any inherent problems with mixing species from different areas, as long as the water conditions are fairly similar.

Agreed. with all the fish that don't get along, it does simplify things to stay native. The clown knife I spoke of, came with 4 pacu. the previous owner had them all together without a problem. it was just take them all or nothing. The wife really wanted to keep him but me being me he had to go. Just looking to see if anyone was a purist like me

I love CK's. I've always wanted one but never had a tank large enough. It's an awful temptation when I see them at my lfs, but I've been down that road before with other species, and I don't want to do that again. Lol
