Wow I hadn't anticipated so much response in such a short time!
Looks like the general consensus here is that they require a high concentration of dissolved oxygen. and I know that the heat of the water has a huge impact on the amount of dissolved oxygen, aswell as tank volume and water parameters.
I stopped trying to keep the water very soft, with the abundance of wood I have in there I imagine its not super hard and alkaline but probably more so than what they would have liked.
I actually was aware of the Heckelii adult conspecific aggression, but I got them at 1" and 3 for $16 on a sale. I wanted to just thin them out as they hit a larger size but I guess it was sooner than I thought.
It is actually very comforting to hear that even some of the forums high profile members like Notho and duanes have also experienced similar problems with them
