i don't know if its good practice to have them feed up top since they are prone to bloat. no expert, i'm rather looking for confirmation on this

I don't think them feeding at the waterline would cause bloat in them at all. If them taking in air while feeding was a concern I'd probably freak out every time I saw one of them race to the top for a gulp of air.
IMO I think bloat has more to do with water quality, possibly nutrition.

I have never seen mine do it but perhaps it is because my gars eat all of the floating food before my polys get a chance.

All of my bichirs do it if I don't feed them for a day. It's crazy, their so used to eating at the same time daily, that they go nuts if I miss one day.

If it was uncommon for bichirs to feed on floating food, we'd have a lot more gravel digestion issues.

Back when I had a bichir, it and my other fish would always be waiting at the top for their food. In fact, my frozen bloodworms rarely hit the ground.

cool thanks for all the replies because my senegal all he does is chill up top and feed up top, i have a endli bichir which never goes up top only eats on the bottom
