Anyone else have commitment issues?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have these issues, have been trying to reign it in my self...

I feel this way.
I have no interest in rehoming fish that I have spent a lot of time and money on keeping healthy.

Agreed.

I also usually think about the fish, and wonder what kind of life they would live being relocated after spending years in my house, with me, and my routine? A bit sappy I suppose, but I suspect that the stress could be quite significant for many of the larger more intelligent species, especially if rehomed as adults, and especially if rehomed to the hands of an idiot with terrible husbandry practices. I certainly would never consider doing that with one of our dogs. Some animals, including fish, might never bounce back from that kind of an ordeal.

It's interesting, at least to me, how some folks who preach about how best to keep a fish in captivity (size of tank, tank mates, etc) apparently have little issue with swapping out stock whenever the urge strikes.

This is very true. I relocated my 14 inch+ Red devil to someone with a 2000 gallon pond basement. I posted on CL and got tons of interest and I told every single person send me a picture of your tank. Some had 10 gallons and some had 55 gallons stock with fish. I told them nicely a 10 gallon won't house this fish it won't be able to move. The 55 gallon tank is way to small for him and said red devils are not that aggressive. I never replied. Took me a month found the right guy and he came from 2 hours away to pick it up. I had that fish for 6 years and was hard to let go but he was very eager to breed with anything that swims and was aggressive towards females only due to that.

I've pretty much kept all my fish until they die... with 3 exceptions. One, there was a time I reduced my tanks from 26 down to about 10. I did get rid of some. Second, I had one outgrow my 190gallon(my biggest). Third, (now that I'm down to 1 tank)I had a fish attacking all the other fish... so I took him to the LFS.

The only time I did a complete change was when I decided I wouldn't keep agressive fish anymore. I got rid of all my CA cichlids. And couldn't be happier. I still have my Fahaka flying solo as well as lungfish. I have some fish thay squabble but no more murders.

I also am down to one tank, and am fully committed to my clown loach shoal, but have found myself swapping out mid swimmers/dithers about once a year. So I guess I'm half committed??.... haha
