It's the first and only smartphone I've ever owned, in fact the first non-nokia phone I've ever had! I bought it because my sister and wife both have HTC and it was easier than reading the instructions myself! 
It's about a year old and starting to get a bit tired, I'm fairly hard on phones and have already had to replace the screen once when it fell out of my bag at work and dropped about 8' from the engine and landed face down on the ballast. I've spilled boiling water on it (again at work, trying to make a cuppa while on the move, the rough track makes it a fairly challenging task), dropped it numerous times, etc etc. Will probably go for Samsung when it finally dies...
