Now here's someone I can relate to My 3 favourite genres are 90's punk rock and grunge and alternative. I like pearl jam but more of a nirvana, alice in chains kind of guy.
Nirvana and AiC are great, AiC in particular, but I think PJ's catalogue has a bit more depth, musically and lyrically.
One of my favorite sad songs of all time, unfortunately not on Youtube, is Local H's cover of "Smothered in Hugs" by Guided By Voices. Guided By Voices is a low-fi noise rock/no wave band, so while they get credit for writing this song... IMO, Local H perfected it, their melodic and acoustic arrangement much more suits the song. Here are the lyrics...
"In the summer that you came
there was something eating everyone
and the sunshine fund was low
We couldnt greet you
with a simple hello
And the watchers of the flood
were busy in their chambers
Making sure there was new blood
to sustain their dying veins
But I believe you
no need for further questioning
I'm gonna leave with you
you can teach me all you know
Which way will we go now?...
on our trip to taller windows
I really don't know now
I really don't know
In the winter that you left
there was business as usual
with the same old fears and frustrations
But the word got out
it was really such a pity
The judges and the saints
and the textbook committee
decided you should be left out
Not even mentioned
But I believed you
no need for further questioning
I'm gonna leave with you
you can teach me all you know
Which way will we go now?...
in our trip to taller windows
I really don't know now
I really don't know..."
Rumor has it that the singer of Guided By Voices, who was a teacher, wrote this song about a student who was depressed an unapproachable who later committed suicide.
