Anyone else want to bag their own fish?

It's just dumbfounding to me that you work at a pet store and you provide people with incorrect information. I worked pet retail for 5 years, if I truly didnt know something I would tell the customer that I wasnt sure and I would research it when I got home.
Being an avid reader I learned a lot working at the shop.I would read all the aquarium books I could during any down time.I don't imagine most kids working in the shops these days could be bothered with doing too much of that.

K krichardson I agree completely. Who wants to educate themselves anymore? Easier to give false information, make the sale and move on with the day. I gotta test these people on their knowledge. Had a Petsmart rep tell me an oscar can live in a 29G its whole life. Makes me mad when I overhear people saying the wrong thing and it takes all my strength not to comment and call them out

Brother,I have definitely been there!

Honest to god, I think a lot of people on this forum have been there lol, I mean dont get me wrong I do not claim I know it all because its far from true, but I know more than your basic pet store employee or someone whos got a tank for laughs with community fish. Heck, my friend has 2 tanks and I'm still teaching him stuff

I watched a teenage employee at Petco give the net to about a 5 year old to catch 10 neons for an unrelated customer, I have to imagine less than 50% survived for long when they got home.

Reason #287 I try to avoid box pet stores.

I do my best to avoid Petco, Petsmart and places like that. The store where I get my fish is still a chain but they have been very good to me. Charging me 25% less or more on fish that are a lot more expensive, not to mention my girlfriend bought her bird there and I get all my supplies from that store. Just the lack on knowledge when it comes to fish is soul crushing.. still drives me nuts I had 2 employees tell me a pacu and a silver dollar are the same fish.. the guy who knew his stuff left for a job working for Seacrest so I'm stuck with the rest of the not so knowledgeable scrubs.

No one knows it all but we should all try to learn something new about our fish and hobby every day.An old buddy of mine was who got me into fishkeeping years ago and I like to think that I have far surpassed him in overall knowledge.Heck,he's still of the opinion that once yearly water chanes is good enough for most fish!.....ya can't tell him nothin!

It kills me when I overhear an chain store employee tell people with new tanks that the group of fish they are buying are going to die but it's cool because they have a replacement guarantee. I always took time to explain the biological cycle that happens in a new setup and sold them appropriate fish. Almost never had issues with customers losing fish in a new setup.
