Starting a Tank cleaning business??I am seriously considering doing this, but i want to find out if this is really tangeable around my area.I already have a van to use and i really dont think i need alot to start out,but insurance is a main concern.Has anyone ever thought about this or even tried it??Any input is appreciated!!!!Thanks!!!:headbang2:drool:

Well it all depends on your market...in my town it wont fly because there is one good fish store in town (out of 2 total)..

the good fish store is run by a hubby/wife team and hubby is a lawyer and thier son has the tank cleaning market in town

I know Big Al's does this, I dont think the market is really big enough for independent cleaners. Really it is just big restaurants and businesses that would need this service, I dont see regular people needing a service like this.

i agree unless you have a large amount of pll who are lazy and have fish :)

In alot of areas, people want the tank, but either don't have the time to care for it, or just don't want to do it. It depends on what the area is like.

But that is like people shoveling their drive ways, they might pay a kid $5-10 to do it but you cant make a living off it. Unless it is a huge tank and there are a lot of them, you wont make much money at it.

Which is why Big Al's does because it is just a small part of their big company...

Go for it, you have to be a salesman though! It is a billion dollar business in this country, an independent can make plenty of $$$ in it, but you have to have some balls, and know your stuff. Reef is a must, if you cannot do reef and you can't sell people the best of equipment, do not waste your time.

Does it help to have a store first or at least work in one that has salt water? Yes definitely! I know of stores that do $4million a year with just their maintenance contracts. People work for them all the time and then spin off and do it themselves!

I know there already exist a couple in the Boston / South Shore area. So the demand must be there but I don't know if another business (you) would be able to fit in there.

Some guy thats friends with my brother apparently works for one but I don't know much more than that.
