Anyone ever make a self propelled rotating spray bar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
shark aquarium has a rotating spray bar on one of his filters... looks like a bar from a dishwasher...

A long time ago I was at a fish store in Bellevue WA and the store had a big filter system that made use of spray bars.

I loved the look of the spray bar and so I asked about its use?
I asked if it ever plugged?
"All the time" was the answer the store guy told me.

The guy at the store said that cleaning the spray bars on the filters was a job they had tio do all the time, and that the spray bars would always stop spinning from time to time too due to gunking up at the joints.

If you have a pump that is strong enough that the spray bar never gets plugged then I could see this working.

If you get it to work, then try this idea-
Glue on that mirror stuff and turn the spray bar into something like a disco-ball and then have a few small pen size lasers aimed at the spray bar....
Then when you show the filter to someone have it inside a door to a shelf so that when you open the door the whole room lights up with light and reflected laser beams....thats a show!

pressure and flow are two seperate pump atributes, you can have either without the other...
takes 30 t0 40 lbs to open sprinkler head and make it rotate, pressure and gph is different, will work with a pressure converter valve available at plumbing supply stores

have you considered doing something like a pinwheel or waterwheel? Instead of having moving parts on the output pipe I was thinking you could rig something to spin under the pipe as it dumps water.

With a little ingenuity (no shortage on this site) it seems like taking a small bicycle wheel on its side with some coverings would have some potential. Something like that?

i think you will be glad you decided against the rotating bar...that design would probibly work but it will leak like a sieve and cost more than a commercial unit in PVC fittings.

IMO its be easier to make a grid out of pvc that hung from the top of the can but thats basically a drip plate.
