I have not done it but I have picked up(rescued) a discus that was ordered in by another customer who apparently never showed. The discus was healthy, nice colors , not show quality(little bit of a forehead, but not one I would cull, just not breed) but still pretty to look at. Price paid $11 and she is going on 3+ years old now.
I asked on their ordering policy at that time as it shocked me, you can special order at petco
. This is what I was told.
1. No need to pay up front, pay when you buy.
2. If it is not up to your liking there is no commitment, you can pass
3. You can not pick the strain of discus(in this case), what you get will be random.
4. I was told you can request the fish not be put into store tanks, but the stores policy was you must be able to get to the store with in 30 minutes of them calling you. At which point you can look at the fish in the bag and make your call.
5. Most fish are backed by the same guarantee policy
Some of it seemed up to the store as to what their policy was and some of it seems like just limitations in their system.
