Anyone ever seen these lights before?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've never used them, but they look ok I guess. I doubt they would work for plants, but probably ok for fish-only tank. 120 degree beam is pretty wide, though...

For planted tanks, LED setups should have blue and red leds from what I have read. I am sure Amazon Swords would live. lol They just don't die.

Interesting. I'd like to see one installed.

Interesting, I have not seen anything like that. Take one for the team and write a feedback.:D

These lights actually work pretty good. I have seen them used but for different applications. They are supposed to be more energy efficient than the T5 lighting.

I'm sure they're more energy efficient, I just wonder if the quality/quantity of light is near the same as the original T5 bulbs.

And while I'm curious, I'll pass on the $45/bulb cost for now.

You need the correct color temp of blue & red LEDs for plants. LEDs dont produce a wide spectrum of light like most lamp types, so there's no wasted light energy. Most lamps (T5 included) produce a broad spectrum, then the unwanted colors are filtered out to produce the desired color output of the lamp (6,800K; 10,000K; 18,000K; etc.).

To answer your other question, the total light may or may not be equal to a T5, but it is all focused in one direction. A flourescent gives off 360 degrees of light & uses a reflector to focus the wasted half of the output back down where you want it. Reflectors usually mean lost light, but a much wider light beam. Check out Neoprodigy's DIY LED build to see the LED's "spotlight effect" I'm talking about.
