Anyone ever thought of this?

Instead of bio balls why not use whiffle golf balls? The ones with holes in them.

I saw them as I was walking through walmart last night and wondered. Can get 18 for about $1.20 at walmart.

Figure I need about 25 packs. 450 balls at $30 total cost.

Thoughts?

they dont have as much surface area as bioballs

The only difference is that the bio-balls have a lot more interior surface area than the whiffle balls will. The wiffle balls would probably work in a jiffy though, and that's not a bad price...

You'll probably have better flow through/around them as well, since there's so much open space inside. But that's just conjecture...

you could really use anything for bio media. the reason we choose certain objects over others is surface area. for example, pot scrubbies have 3-4x more surface area than bio balls

I would think that the wiffle balls would float as well?

If you scuffed them up with 40 grit sandpaper, you could create a ton more surface area. Really deep scratches all over them would significantly increase the area.

Hmm... Just thinking out loud.. Thanks for the input. Ideally I will go with scrubbies or nylon floor scrub pad depending on what I can find. It is unreal how hard it is to find scrubbies
