my 90 gallon acrylic is very low to the ground and i want to put another tank on top of it. there is a hood on the 90 that would distribute the weight of the second tank across the whole top. the tank is 16 gallons and weighs roughly 150 pounds. i don't think there should be a problem with it . does anyone here have any suggestions?

Personally I would test the weight on the hood before putting it over the second tank. But I don't think I would ever have a second tank sitting on a hood, you could ghetto rig something better than this.

do you have any experience with it or are you just saying its not worth the risk?

You don't need experience with it to know it's a bad idea. Neither the hood nor the aquarium are designed to support the weight of another aquarium.

I personally wouldn't do it either. There are plenty of DIY Stand threads on this site and I would consider spending a few dollars and build your own Multi Level Stand. If done right, you can always skin the stand later... The Stands are very simple in design and only take and afternoon to build...

I guess my point is Why Risk it? Would you try stacking a house on top of another house just because the roof seemed strong? Even if the "Hood" is strong enough to hold 150lbs of tank, water, sunstrate, rocks, filter and heater on it, the Glass and Silcone isn't.... The 90gal is Not designed for that. JMO though.

Now if you had a Canopy on top of the 90gallon that was supported by 4 2x4 corner posts whcih actually held the canopy about 1/2+ over the rim of the tank, I wouldn't potentially see anything wrong with that.

Can you show us a pic of the 90gal stand and hood along wityh the tank that you are desiring to put upon it? Maybe we could brainstorm and help you come up with a solution...... :D

hoods usually are supported by small wood blocks around the edge to allow for overhang. Not to mention tanks are not really designed to support fully loaded tanks on top either.

the tank sits on a fireplace harth so i know its strong enough. the hood, i built, and a 2x4 sits along the entire rim of the tank so weight will be spread evenly. where the second smaller tank will sit, three 2x4s span the length of the hood to support the tank.
my phone is being a pos right now, if i get it workin ill post pics asap :)

Wouldn't the top tank inhibit access into the 90g?

I am trying to visualize the arrangement and nothing I come up with ends in "Happily Ever After". I agree with what others have said. A nice DIY stand would accomplish what you're after, but keep everything safe and accessible.
