Anyone Ever Try This?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm Going to have to say no. unless you made a double stand the weight of the 16g would crush the lid. I.e. big mess.

the tank sits on a fireplace harth so i know its strong enough. the hood, i built, and a 2x4 sits along the entire rim of the tank so weight will be spread evenly. where the second smaller tank will sit, three 2x4s span the length of the hood to support the tank.
my phone is being a pos right now, if i get it workin ill post pics asap :)

Yeah, Dude...... Just froget it! It's a Mess waiting to happen! If you do it and something happens... NO Offense But, Don't come crying to MFK cause "we told you so".....

i know for a fact the hood is plenty strong enough to hold it. i sat on it and noticed no bowing or stress of the hood, i weigh 190. my concern is not in the hood in any way but in the tank. i'm very confident in the tanks ability to do this though so i'm gonna give it a shot unless someone tells me of a similar but failed attempt. sorry to disregard warnings, i don't mean any offense by it. here's a few pics. i will post a success or failure thread either tonight or tomorrow for you guys to rip on my :)

lol, good attitude :)

Now that I see what you have over your tank, I can see why you don't seem to be too concerned. The 2X4's would handle the weight ok without collapsing. I still think your access will be close to zero, which will be a big PITA in the future.

One thing you have to consider...glass has marginal compressive strength. With the 90g empty, yeah, it would "probably" be OK. But once filled, your tank IS bowing. It may be minimal, but the water is going to bow your tank somewhat. Now you put 160 lbs on top of bowed glass. You have large forces pushing both down and outward.

Hold a saltine cracker vertical with your thumb on the bottom edge and your index finger on top. Then squeeze. Basically, this is what very well could happen to your tank walls.

haha thanks. and the 90 is acrylic. i wouldn't even think about it if it was glass! and i have figured out a way to remove most of the weight from the tank and put it to the ground.
i don't have any saltines, can you show me a video?
thats a very good metaphor!

My question would be is the glass on the perimeter of this tank able to support the load. To me it sounds like an unecassarry risk just my opinion though

my 90 gallon acrylic

I need to learn to read!

On that note, I have not arguments left. Well, except the limited access one I keep tossing out there lol.

Good luck, be safe. Glad you liked the metaphor :)
