Don't use the old stuff you got, the stuff you just bought is to nice to mix with anything else.

Make sure you rinse the Fluorite first before you add it into your tank, it will get very cloudy in the tank even after you rinse it.

Which Fluorite did you get? the Regular black or the black sand?

ok, i just got back from the lfs with 1 bag of eco complete, and 2 bags of flourite. i plan on layering the substrate for the tank. at the moment, im thinking putting a very thin layer of the old substrate i had in my 40g at the bottom, then eco complete, and then top off with flourite. should i? or is there another method that could be more beneficial for my plants??

You're not going to see much difference between using fluorite and eco-complete. The only real difference is that "real blackwater extract with live heterotrophic bacteria" crap that eco-complete brags about (i.e. stained water with a bunch of dead crap in it... sounds great for you tank!)

The flourite red is also very good
Lol, that's because it's the same as the black.

P.S. I've seen a tank with this stuff in it, hard to tell a difference between this and eco complete after it's settled in the tank. Plus, aquariumplants.com is a pretty reputable dealer.

so i SHOULD rinse the flourite?? i was doing a search all yesterday on substrate and i read wyld's post saying that he didnt rinse the flourite. "rinsing will remove some of the nutrients already present in the bag...

You are not going to notice any difference in your plants by leaving the powder you get in the bottom of the bag.
Just rinse it or deal with a very cloudy tank for a couple days.

ahh.... cloudy water for a few days... its cloudy as heck right now... i can see through it but still cloudy. im glad its only gonna be a few days... should i change out my filter media (prefilter floss?) right now i just have a sponge filter over the intake of my powerhead which pumps water to my overhead wet-dry. i plan on letting it run for a few more days before i swich out my sponge filter and the prefilter floss. i have been busy with other stuff so i havent had time to upload pics... ill just upload everything from start to finish, before and after, once the water clears up...

btw, i picked up some new discus today :headbang2 pics to come soon... sorry for the lagg

I mean VERY CLOUDY.

Add a spoon full of chocolate powder to a glass of water cloudy.

My water was very cloudy when I added my Fluorite.
The Fluorite I had was used so it was rinsed before he added to his tank, then he rinsed it when he removed it from his tank, then when I got it I rinsed it and then added to my tank and even after all that it was still very cloudy. Imagine how cloudy it would be with out rinsing it?
Now imagine how your fish would feel trying to breath with small Fluorite dust particles.
Just rinse it first and add to your tank. Use your filter to clear your water and then changes your filter floss stuff when your water gets clear.

uh... my water isnt THAT cloudy Jag. i added the substrate to a dried tank and then started filling up with water... tahts probably why it wasnt as bad as what people on here have mentioned. the water is clearing up nicely for me at the moment. the water looks almost like thier natural environment..

I have been told to go with eco complete just to make sure it is washed very well before putting it in the tank.

u dont have to wash eco-complete... just make sure when ur pouring water into the tank, put a plate or a bowl in the tank and then pour water into the bowl. this way the water doesnt kick up the substrate. thats what people told me, and thats what i did, and it works
