As the title states, I was wondering if I could feed my juvenile discus market shrimp, cut up into very small pieces so he can fit them in his mouth. I know shrimp is fairly high in protein and would like to substitute shrimp into his diet instead of beef heart (to keep my water conditions the best). Does that sound fine? I also already have the shrimp as I was feeding my silver Arowana them but while I was gone during thanksgiving he jumped out :( so I'd like to get some use of these shrimp.

Lol, I haven't myself. I would think shrimp could be just as detrimental to the water, maybe better for the fish?? Idk. I do know currently most use beefheart and swear by it. They usually feed to young Discus, requiring many water changes already anyway and still siphon out excess food after eating. Sorry about your Arrow, that sucks :(

It may be just as bad as beef heart, I think I'll have to do somebmore research before I go ahead and try. Thanks, it was a sad day when I came home and didn't see him swimming where he usually did. Took me 2 days to find him, I was still holding onto the belief that he was hiding somewhere in my tank. Sadly I found him in my stand. He'd somehow jumped out the back and flopped up a bit to get into the stand where he dried out.

I havent heard of anyone using your method of feeding shrimp, but lots of discus keepers use shrimp in their homemade frozen food mixtures. It acts as a binding agent. Look up frozen food recipes & you should be able to find a simple one that includes shrimp

I do. I cut it up very fine, the Altums love it too.

I feed it occasionally when I have some left overseas from feeding other fish.

I have six Altums.

Alright I may try to mince some up and try feeding with some tomorrow. That's awesome, I'm envious of anyone who can keep such a large and majestic fish. Do you have them in a planted tank or more of a bare bottom set up?

No bare bottom tanks for me, I don't like the a aseptic look.
