anyone feed their piranhas wild fish??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've fed my red bellies chunks of northern pike fillets before.

Mine takes all the wild caught fish I offer. I clean the fish like I was going to eat it and cut it into strips that I freeze for future feedings. When I had my reds they would get gutted whole fish I froze for a day.

Also something else to keep in mind that the parasites that we have in the US waters are different parasites then other parts of the world. So if you are feeding your fish live wild caught prey there is a good chance they are being exposed to parasites that they are completely naive to and more likely to get infected by.

I have not yet done it with my rhom, but My pbass was raised on all wild fish. He never seemed to have an issue and got to 12" and 2.5 lbs in a year.

Fed him feeder comets too. One night before I was going on vacation I put 40 comets in his tank. I woke up at 5 am for my flight and he had eaten all but 3 which he was keeping in his mouth. His belly was streched so much you could see individual fish parts thru the skin between his scales. He was laying on the bottom being pushed around by the current. Thought for sure Id come back to a dead fish but he was fine.

not only that, but even if the fish comes from a place that they are used to certain parasites, it doesn't mean that YOUR fish are wild caught, and might not be used to the same parasites a fish from the Wild may be used to...

i would feed my alligator gar chunks of frozen perch and blue gill. also would just get cat fish fillets from the grocery store. I feed fresh fish to my alligator snapping turtle.
