Two tanks should never be ran off of the same canister. That is a closed loop system where one of the tank is separate from the other and both pressurized.
As the return from the filter slowly changes flow between the two, one tank will overflow at some point. Matter of time. Sumps are gravity fed which separates the vessels and takes care if the balance in in the sump.
Connecting the two tanks via bulkheads so they can balance the water level will make this possible and easy. If not a sump should really be considered.
