Has anyone had java ferns in there cichlid tanks?
I was thinking of getting some for my all male tank. I was wondering how to care for them like do they needs ferts or anything etc...
On my 55g all male tank i use a 18" light thats has a plant bulb in it.
Heres the tank

Don't know how they'll do with the cichlids since I just go my first Africans this week but I have Java fern in 2 of my tanks. One is pretty heavily planted with hot5 lights and gets ferts and it does fine. Another is my fluval chi Betts tank that gets no ferts and for the first 2 months I forgot the tank had a light and it does really well in there. Basically if the cichlids don't shred them, they will live.

I have some tanks completely aqua scaped with java fern, it is invincible. Needs no ferts or co2 and only minimum lighting. You can treat it like a plastic plant almost. I have some with chocolate cichlids, convicts, pike cichlids, jewel cichlids and they dont eat it. Also it can stand up to any digging or being pulled out by cichlids as it just doesn't die. The absolute perfect aquarium plant in my opinion

i have had lot of ferns in my cichlid tank.. they were busy fighting among themselves ..plants were safe ;)
to be safe first try adding plastic plants and see what they do..

I have some they don't touch it at all..
