I've bred, shown and trained them for over 20 years. I have one I co-own going to be bred soon. My first blue. 2 years ago I bred/owned/co-bred over 5 dogs that gained their championships in one year. ITs fun and frustrating.
Danes car couch potatoes AFTER they turn 3 years old. Before that they are major pains in the ***. They will eat a couch as opposed to sitting on it, and would kill everyone of your childs stuffed animals, just for the pleasure of seeing the stuffing all over the floor. That blue we will breed- 18 months ago she ate a carpet. The vet pulled enough of the carpet out of her stomach to fill a gallon freezer bag- I have the pics and the $2500 bill to prove it!
A 150 lb puppy is lethal to toddlers and grown men. Toddlers because they are knocked down when the big clods turn around in a space too small for them, and men are just the right hight for a 300 MPH wagging tail. My hubby walks around the house with his hands cupped over himself...
Nibbles(my 22 month old puppy) just broke the D ring on his collar yesterday when he bounced out the kennel door. Thankfully he does not take off running when loose.
I also require new buyers to plan on at least one visit in the life of the dog that will cost more than s/he does. Whether its an accident, eating carpet, stones or a couch, or getting bloat or hip dysplasia, it WILL happen. And I swear my vet charges me by the pound for each regular visit.
They are very expensive. Not just to buy, but to own.
I had one dog dig up underground electrical wires. Another tore the pool liner when he tried to get out of the pool, one ate through a closed door(they get separation anxiety sometimes)... Oh, and they have caught and killed squirrels and raccoons. Chickens and annoying yappy small dogs are squeaky toys.
But to ME, they are worth it.
