I was thinking that.

Have the buckets on the outside, heavy duty pump in pond, pump water out into the buckets, and let it flow back in off a water fall or something. I'd just need to keep the pump close to the side where it can be easily reached

Or tether it to the side of the pond.

You want the pump in the deepest part of the pond (and set up off the bottom so it doesn't get clogged by debris) for good circulation.

3x turnover = 580gph so 600gph-800gph would be ok.

I'm cheap so I do Harbor Freight when I can

With a little head pressure and frictional losses you'd be right there.
