Anyone have any aquarium/earthquake issues?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't know what size tanks all of you have, but if we get a quake here in the midwest that's strong enough to move my 220g tank, there is very little any strap or brace will do to help secure it.

On a tank of that size, you wouldn't bother putting a strap or brace on it, what you do is get flood insurance . . . :screwy: I'm talking about 60< tanks.

Back when we had the big Loma Prieada quake I had a 55g set up on a wood stand. That was a 7.0-7.5 on the ricter scale and I lost a drop of water and the tank moved about 1/4 inch on the stand. I figure the weight in water is enough to really keep the tank from shifting. Since then I really don't pay it to much attention. After an 8.0 quake, if the house falls on the tank theres not much I can do about it.

That's kinda what I'm sayin. If the quake is big enough, it doesn't matter how many straps and braces you have. If structures are coming down, your tank is done.

no issues, I put a whole lumbar yard and cross bracing inside my stand, let the earth quakes come..........no problemo :)

i was wondering when some would mention this, i thought about you all going through this with your tanks.. we had a quake here in upststate ny..enough to crack the cement floor in basement fishroom.. nerve wracking and who has earthquake insurance:eek:

I remember when an earthquake struck in 1992, I was living in San Diego at the time. Actually, I've been through too many out there to remember. But this particular one struck when I was alseep, and it woke me up. I saw my 29 gallon aquarium wobbling a little, it was on an iron stand in my bedroom. I jumped out of bed and ran over to grab and hold it. Then I remembered how much it weighed, and figured I probably couldn't stop it if it was going to fall and might get hurt in the process, so I let it go and backed away, lol. It did not fall, so no harm done.
