Anyone have Citrinellus from Gage (Cichlid Connection)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I guess to me the thought is you've seen a bunch of nice adults from Rapps. I don't know of any specific Don Conkel citrinellus adults to compare with. Are you willing to wait a month or two on what is as close to a guaranteed nice fish or roll the dice on ones a little bigger? I personally would spend the couple months growing out smaller fish. Hell, you buy 'em and we can throw them in my tank for a couple months. I like growing out fish.

Or you could get 3 F1 xiloaensis for $75, a male and two females at 6".

If he had istlanum I'd go in on an order with you. Frankly Rapps' list is kind of weak right now glancing over it.

I have to agree with modestman. If I were you I would get a group at 3" size. Because Rapps midas are awsome but some are hit or miss. I have ordered about 6 midas and I found that the fry they produce are nicer then the parents. And Rapps is a busy man so if you buy an adult midas and ask for a male you might get a female (Happened to me twice but ended up using them to breed). In the end its your call.
FYI Midas in my avatar is the last midas I ordered and by far The nicest I have recieved. I have ordered a total of 8 midas from him and would not buy anywhere else.

Can't order until the beginning of July so there is still time. Xilo were one I was also thinking of doing and still might. I know Rapps has had quality Midas in the past and wanted to see how Gages measured but I guess not as many people order them since no one has one to show.

I would be willing to grow out Rapps assuming they hit over 4" by then but the only thing that concerns me is his breeder male. I don't know if he has more than one but the one posted on his site isn't my kind of Midas. Ultimately I want my male to be beefy, small snout, and a nice nuchal hump.

Would be the ideal Midas for me shape wise.

I hate snouty Midas with vertical nuchal humps.

Also The midas in Rapps page is nice. I bet you the fry look better than the parents. My male loses his hump and slim down during breeding. Which is why I think rapps midas looks the way it does.

Here is my main breeder right now. He is a lot bigger now.

Here is my 11" Xilo Never developed the big hump I expected but still a great fish.

In my limited experience growing out centrals I have found with growing young fish, you have a better opportunity to manipulate their environment(food, water qaulity, etc) which equals awesome looking fish. My male from rapps did not look like much when I got him but boy he grew into a looker. If I had a spare 125, Rapps midas would be the first thing I would get.

Male when I got hime at 3-3.5"
