dont skimp on gear. buy what works well and buy it once. replacing broken gear sucks so get the best. i love shimano. performs awsome and they have a lifetime warranty. so does g loomis. even if a buddy shuts the door on your rod tip and it snaps.. free rod! check out youtube, lots of fishing vids on there too.
ive been an avid fisher since i was about 8. i like to answer questions and give opinions if youd like. good luck

Oh yeah, like he said, buy stuff from those local shops, make sure it's not rookie stuff like bobbers and power bait also. I spent a lot of time in a fly fishing shop doing my senior project, and nothing was more annoying then a guy coming in, ask where all the spots were, then walk out haha.

I don't live in michigan but I visit family there every once in a while. As for saginaw county. Try the saginaw river if you just want something to catch(but not eat..yucky, you'll see what I mean when you get there). The river is filled with all kinds of fish but mostly big carp in the 10 to 30 lb class and they are always biting. Like I said, not where you want to eat anything but good to catch stuff. Fish with either corn or leeches(odd, but they work very well there) on the bottom with about 8-14 lb line, whatever you're comfortable with. Learn how to set your drag and cast it out and wait. Make sure to keep the rod secure as they will pull it in the river in the blink of an eye. Also, perch migrate through the river in the winter and can be a blast to catch by the hundreds...ask anyone you see about that and they can probably help more.
If you want something else(a little cleaner), You can fish below Sanford dam in sanford county. It is the best fishing spot in the area this time of year. There are lots of channel cats and they are tons of fun to catch. I have a secret bait that works amazingly for catfish anywhere but you'll have to pm me if you want haha...I'm not giving up my secrets that easily. Hit up sanford sport shop and they'll tell you everything you need to know about that spot.
Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more specific questions and I'll do my best to help out. I know how tedious it can be to learn but once you get good at fishing it is a blast.

Doesn't hurt to do some reading too. Wealth of info. There is nothing wrong with Walmart for a beginner. They have decent rods/reels and tackle.
