rather than getting a single cichlid, why dont you get a group of exodons? They stay small and you can fit many in a 55g. They are also more aggessive than most other cichlids

I totally disagree with Green Terrors in 55 gal. IMO 4'x 12" is not wide enuff for a 12" fish unless the 55 gal is a growout tank. Africans - Auratus, Johananii, Maingano, Kenyii, Electric blue Haps, to name just a few that don't get larger than 8". CA/SA - Neets are bar-none the nasties lil' cichlids -Salvini's, Convicts, Firemouths, to name a few more that don't get larger than 8". And for clarification- Just because you HAVE a 12" fish in a 12" wide tank doesn't mean it is the optimal enviorment for housing that fish.
yeah it is EXTREMELY rare for a GT male to get over 10in (it is possible but not likely and def not for several years) i also think the GT idea would be awesome get you a nice male GT, every petstore carries them and they have awesome colors and attitude

you want something full of attitude and mean as hell get a grammode. ever hear of a dovii well a dovii is probably the nastiest cichlid out there but grows way to large for your 55. a grammode is just as nasty as a dovii but wont outgrow your tank. get a pair of gammodes
